How to spend an evening avoiding clean-up

Okay, so my tree fell last week, and I still haven't finished picking up all the crap it littered across my lawn. Part of the reason for my lapse in activity is that, as I was inspecting the fallen tree, I sprained my ankle and did my opposite knee some small renewal of harm as well, but the greater reason for staying away from treefall was this:
'56 Buick at Monmouth's Cruise Night 2006

Monmouth, last Friday night, hosted its annual Cruise Night. The above Buick had a lovely, shiny hood ornament of which I took several pictures '56 Buick hood ornament at Monmouth's Cruise Night 2006 before I realized how much I liked hood ornaments in general Pontiac Hood Ornament Pontiac Hood Ornament @ Rivoli and how much I also liked the cars to which they are attached. It was strange, to think of a middle-aged female me walking around and drooling at the cars, while my 21-year-old male companion for the evening (my best friend's son) was more interested in straight conversation... Not trapped by gender boundaries are we!

And, yes, I did continue to salivate over the cars Pontiac at the Bijou and the trucks Pick-up in front of Warren County Court House and the cars Corvette Corvette Corvette Cougar! at Monmouth's Cruise Night 2006 Plymouth Prowler at Monmouth's Cruise Night 2006 in all states of restoration Rust-and-Brick

But my favorite moment was coming home, downloading the 200+ pictures and realizing what a religious experience this had been
On a Wing and a Prayer

I was refreshed enough to do most of what had to be done, today, to ready my porch for the contractors' arrival tomorrow at daybreak (ecch). I think I'll come over here again when they get here & just look at more pictures of spiffy cars. And maybe post a few more.

Update: as if that weren't enough to get me thinking, Gateway Pundit over the weekend posted the news that Maurice Strong & George Soros Team Up to Sell Chinese Cars in US. And the picture he posts is of a piddly thing with no style. I hope people don't forget the roots of modern transportation too quickly. And I'd really hate for George Soros to get any richer at the expense of the Working American.

Will somebody help me, please?

Ever since last Friday, when I attended the Cruise Night festivities in Downtown Monmouth, I've had nothing but car- , motorcycle- and truck-related songs running through my head.

It all started when I heard the eternally 1970s local band, Eternity Road, playing their usual flashback tunes -- the same ones I heard at the dances in the high school gym when I was young and stupider. The band was playing its usual mix of rock and pop tunes (sans disco, thank all the powers that be). I turned to ex sailorette and said, "Wouldn't it be cool if they played nothing but car songs, next year?"

That night, I heard the instrumental strains of "Low Rider" running throughout my dreams. Since then, I've heard "Highway to Hell", "Drive My Car", "Two of Us" (the Beatles tune), and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", to name but a few.

So here is my dilemma: until I can come up with as many songs of motorized transport as is humanly possible, my bipolar mind won't let go of it, and I'll continue to obsess over the list, and replay songs in my head until I want to bash something in.

Some of the other titles I have running in my head include:
Cars
Little GTO
Hot Rod Lincoln
Little Old Lady from Pasadena
I Can't Drive 55
No Particular Place to Go
Little Deuce Coupe
Drive
Truckin'
Fun, Fun, Fun
Pink Cadillac
Will all y'all toss a few titles onto my list? Maybe Eternity Road will be able to build a decent thematic concert out of it, for next summer's Cruise Night.

Fun at Cruise Night, 2005

Yesterday afternoon, I was all excited about seeing the Wienermobile (which pulled into the supermarket lot almost 2 hours later than its scheduled arrival, to much ballyhoo), & I took a boatload of pix, but for some reason, the flash card I was using turned stubborn on me, when I tried to download, so I'm still trying to retrieve the many close-ups of the rolling dog. Nevertheless, the evening was less of a techno-waste.

You couldn't ask for better weather for this event! It was sunny and mild, the temperature just barely capping 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with a gentle breeze coming from the west. I threw caution to the winds and went out without my cane, wearing crappy lightweight shoes with little support. I knew I would regret my choice later, but I was feeling reckless. Besides, I had a trunkload of my meds, so I figured I was covered. I was certainly sunscreened into the next decade...except for my earlobes. Hmmph. Mental note: lobes burn, too.

At a little past 5, I found a parking space literally right next to the gate, as it were. Somebody had vacated a corner space, so I gave my obligatory chant to Olga, the goddess of parking: "Olga, Olga, full of grace! Thank you for this parking space" (I find I'm too much of a traditionalist to go with my younger sister's version, "Olga, Olga, you're so hot! Thank you for the parking spot!").

Anyway, from there, I roamed past the Midwest Mudrunners' trucks, the restored Bentley, the dozens of Corvettes, and (be still my heart) the Wienermobile,

as it rested right at the Town Square. By that time, I had run out of memory in my backup flash card, so I have only a smattering of pix to show for all my hour of hiking.

I met up with ex sailorette just before 6, & we wandered a short while, admiring the cars, then settled in to watch over her brother's De Lorean while the owner did his own sight-seeing. During the course of our car-sitting, a teen-aged boy came a-salivating, followed closely by three girls a-giggling.

It was fun to watch other people gawk and ogle in the way I did the other cars... the De Lorean is in the process of being dressed up to match the one in "Back to the Future". I think ex sailorette said they were only a clock and a couple of prop wires away from a total match.

Anyway, while we sat there, unbeknownst to us, we got our photo taken for the local rag, the Daily Review Atlas (whose editors very kindly print my weekly columns, at no cost to me). I've scanned the pic as it appeared on the back page of today's edition (I'm the one sitting on the curb, by the rear bumper, she's in her spiffy new wheelchair).

About an hour later, ex sailorette and I were relieved of our watch, so we wandered up South Main Street to look at the roughly 120 cars we had not yet studied. I admit, this show is a car restorer's greatest fantasy and biggest nightmare. There were classics, souped-up machines, and a handful of beaters asking for somebody to take them to a good home and show them some loving. All I could hear myself thinking was, "If I won the lottery..." There wasn't any single vehicle there that I saw in my dreams, last night -- it was a parade of the best of the best. Still, if I had to choose, it would have to have been one of those lovely muscle cars, like the '60s Chargers, or maybe the '40s Cadillacs, instead.

Mmmmmm... Better even than the funnel cake! And worth all the pain I'm feeling today!

Vroom, vroooommmmmm!

Heading out this evening to Monmouth's Cruise Night activities, so I can see me a whole brainful of caaarrrrrzzzzz. I've recharged all my batteries, loaded up all my flash media cards, and filled my purse (it's really more like a medium-sized suitcase with a shoulder strap and places to put my sketchbook and medications -- the real bulk of my kit) with bottles of water.

I am now heading out to see what my friends have driven into town this year.

I'll post a few pics when I return to blogging, either tomorrow or Monday.

Why is Pontiac's face red?

Hood Ornaments and Details from Cruise Night 2007

Pontiac is blushing beneath that silvery arc. Why? Because the owner of that car has put some

unusual covers over the headlamps and bumper.

He's a little embarrassed. Look the other way.

Now, he's just a little blue.

I could have had a V-8!

Israeli weapons damage cars in MONMOUTH, IL!

Note the beginnings of a car swarm around the damaged vehicle: Potential greatness
The Israeli missile obviously tore away the hood of the car, plus all the side windows were shattered and sent to oblivion, and the paint was completely stripped away. Oddly, just as in the case of the vehicles in the photographs from Lebanon, the front windshield is fine, the tires are perfectly intact, and the chrome hubcap has even been polished by the blast.

The tragedy continues to unfold, as evidence has come to light that the Israeli Air Forces have developed a shrink ray, as well:
