We've become so dependent upon rapid transportation that this could chew up and spit out a hefty chunk of this nation's growing economy.
And, I don't know what the details are of the dispute, but I have this funny feeling that the unions are largely to blame. I know I'm biased, but I've also seen how effectively unions have destroyed industries, over the past couple of decades, by demanding things which the corporations could not afford (e.g. GM). I'd hate to see what happens to the already scary NYC subway system if the Transport Workers Union destroy the MTA... come to think of it, I'd hate to see what happens to NYC -- and our nation -- if the TWU has its way, unfettered. They say they are simply demanding respect. I'd respect them a whole lot more if they weren't playing this out in the week right before Christmas. How can anybody respect a Scrooge or a Grinch? (Update: Michelle Malkin has a nice post on this.)
I'm in favor of importing scabs whenever possible.
When I moved to my little burg, I used to think how nice it would be to have public transportation systems to get me from here to, say, downtown Burlington, IA or the malls and art supply stores of Peoria. Now, I'm grateful for the telecommuter system. If only my work paid more...
sigh.
