this article at Live Scienceindicates that women and men both have senses of humor, but that women tend to be unprepared to find things funny, and analyze data much more thoroughly before finding humor and laughing, and that "Men are using the same network in the brain, but less so... men are less discriminating."
But when women reach the point of finding something funny, because it was so much more work to get there, the reward is greater in the brain. In essence, women get a bigger payoff from the laugh, and don't necessarily accept the easy gag as funny.
The head of the research team, Dr. Allan Reiss, essentially agreed that this explains the Three Stooges. Personally, I think it explains a lot.
