Saul Bellow is gone.
Like Carl Sandburg, he was Midwestern in his heart, though unlike Sandburg, Bellow was a man of the "American City," Chicago. Like Sandburg, while his powerful, poetic gift of words described his home and his people, it also helped redefine us, setting his stamp upon our language.
