I had set my VCR to get the President's press conference, since I was obligated to be away from my set, last night. Imagine my surprise, to discover that a pre-recorded episode of "The Apprentice" chopped off the last segment of a live Q&A period with the most powerful man in the free world.
The Prez had some important things to share with the nation, concerning the economy & the hopes for Social Security reform, and yet CBS, Fox, and NBC decided their bottom line was more important than their obligation to keep the public informed. ABC stuck with the press conference, apparently because they recognized their programming on Thursday sucks -- *even* a presidential press conference promised greater entertainment value than "Sweet Home Alabama". But Fox switched over to Paris Hilton! How lame is that?!
This Chgo Trib article puts a positive spin on things, but, then, isn't the Trib somewhat biased, since it, too, is a news/entertainment media giant?
For those of us who lack cable or satellite tv, access to real, hard news is nearly impossible. Thank God for the internet! At least I have instant access to the transcripts. Of course, I'd like to have gotten tone of voice and expression, too. But with only a modem connection, downloading the complete video would take a millennium or so, wouldn't it? :-p
