Saddling up my high horse again

En garde, you musty sofa! It is time you paid for your linguistic failings!

The offender, this time, is one of those "home equity loan" companies advertising on cable and in the wee hours on network affiliates. The ad's announcer, after extolling the virtues of this company's swell lending practices, says, "Nobody can do what [the company] does. Nobody."

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if nobody can do it, that means nobody. Not even the company bragging that it does it. It might work, if, instead, the man said, "nobody else can do this," or, "nobody can match us." But if nobody can do it, then it's pretty much an impossibility. period. finito. amen.

Jeepers!

There are days when I wish everybody had studied grammar under Mrs. Gurholt. She did a magnificent job of guiding us toward the Land of Making Ourselves Fully Understood.
