WQAD tv sent Kelly Hessedal to take a look around the scene last evening, & she had more current -- & less gossipy -- info than mine of yesterday. Better still, though, is the report from Galesburg's Register-Mail. It has a really good thumbnail aerial view of the flames.
I'm still waiting on the details of the presser supposed to have been held this a.m., although I don't expect that they will have cause this early, while there are still smoldering hot spots being hosed down, as of noon today.
Official accounts put the start of the fire at 12:45 p.m., cause unknown. Nobody from the plant was injured or killed. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries (heat exhaustion most likely) and released. The owners of the factory intend to rebuild and reopen (the location is too good to leave. We're smack dab in the middle of corn & soybean territory, with a meat packing plant providing by-products on the cheap, plus a number of dedicated livestock farmers nearby).
But here are some more photos I've taken:
The above was taken yesterday, upon my arrival at the scene (around 1:00 p.m.), as opposed to today, around 11:00 a.m.:
In case you want further proof that this is the same site, here is the truck trailer in the center of yesterday's shot, as it appears today
The fire dept. still putting out hot spots
This is how the warehouse/truck bay looks now
The most explosive portion of the plant, the grain elevator is still, thankfully, standing. But they're keeping an eye on things for a while.
The destruction seems massive for this little town: both these shots were taken from mthe same vantage point, directly across the street.
I haven't had time to try to put them together into a panoramic shot, yet.
