Veterans battle to keep their day

Considering the bizarrely anti-military statements made recently by Congressman Murtha, and the orgy of "baby-killer" accusations that seems to be growing daily on the left, I keep getting a sense of an ugly '70s acid flashback. And it just keeps getting worse:

In Stamford, CT, the Good Veteran is, apparently, going the way of the proverbial "good Indian" -- at least, as far as the Stamford Board of Ed is concerned. They want to observe Veteran's Day this fall by having the kids come to school, having the teachers come teach classes, and having nobody actually released to attend local daytime ceremonies. They're effectively sweeping veterans under the rug, by making it less of a holiday than Labor Day, Memorial Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day... need I go on? Every other major holiday, when it falls on a weekend day, gets to have a day observed within the work week, but vets get bubkes. "Hey, you have all day Saturday... what more do you want?" Or, the direct quote:
School board President Susan Nabel said students should get a lesson in civics and history instead of a day off.

"We all felt the real meaning of Veterans Day has been lost for students for quite a few years."

Seems to me, they probably got that laissez-faire attitude toward the holiday and the vets from somewhere... can't put my finger on it right now...
