If you see an honest cop, salute him

This week is National Police Week. Here in Monmouth, we have a couple of good cops and a handful in the center of a sh*tstorm, involving under-age girls and alcohol. Many of the locals are still waiting with 'bated breath for word that the three officers will be "properly punished", i.e., fired, fined, and jailed for contributing to the delinquency of minors (the problem with that, as I understand it, is that nobody involved was a minor -- the girls were all over 18, just not old enough to drink, and those officers did not actually provide the teens with liquor, but simply not confiscate it & send the girls either to jail for under-age drinking or call their parents. It was more a sin of omission).

But, by and large, our little community has a fairly good, mostly honest (if not altogether brilliant) force, with the usual percentage of exceptions. Nobody's perfect. But if you see an officer who is working harder to keep you safe than does the stereotypical hollywood-style dolt in blue, let him know you appreciate him. Unlike your generic "good man", a good cop is easy to find -- he's always there for you -- and he should know you're there for him. (The "him" is grammatical only. Respect goes to women on the force, as well.)
